I meant to send out a little essay every month, but, well, starting a new magazine turns out to be a good way to drain all your time. Ten weeks have elapsed since my last update! Whoops… And this time around I just want to poke into your inbox to note some upcoming events and some recent interviews.
Tomorrow, Thursday, May 15: Clarksdale MS
Alongside a bunch of friends, I will be raising money tomorrow night for the Lower Mississippi River Foundation. John Ruskey, LMRF’s founder, has been integral to my own experiences of the big river, so I’m delighted to be able to support the cause. We’ll be selling books, with all proceeds going to LMRF, and I’ll be signing copies.
Tuesday, May 20: New Orleans
I will be appearing at the State of the Coast Conference on a 4 pm panel alongside the legendary John Barry. We’ll be talking about “Reading, Writing, and the River.”
Saturday, May 24: Birmingham, AL
I’ll be in town for the Deep South Convening on the Future Success of American Writers. I believe applications for attendance have closed, but if you’re in the area, let me know!
Thursday, May 29: Greenwood, MS
Two weeks later, I’ll be back in the Delta to record an episode of Thacker Mountain Radio. An appearance on this show is about as close to being a rock star as a writer can get, I think. The show is at 6pm, at the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.
Recent interviews
Last month, I spoke with the Mississippi Independent about how budget cuts threaten the Mississippi River.
Earlier this month, I appeared on the Resilient Futures Podcast—a production of the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems at the University of Georgia—about the river and its engineering.
Thanks for making time to join us Boyce! Very meaningful for us. Good journeys to you! -John
